In her recently published dissertation, Dr Stephanie Boye opens up new perspectives on Franco-Senegalese literature and the untranslatable Senegalese term jom. Her unusual career is closely linked to her time in Senegal. In this portrait, she talks about her story.


Interview with Archivist Judith Boateng from the University of Ghana (15.10.2024)

Judith Opoku-Boateng visited the ACT in September 2024 and joined the Restitution Workshop held together with MIASA. We asked her about her passion for preserving Africa’s audiovisual heritage, the role of archives in the restitution debate and the challenges she faces in preserving audiovisual heritage.

The ABI research cluster “Patterns of (Forced) Migration” in association with the ACT, organised a symposium on Refugees and Displaced Persons in the Great Lakes Region, which provided an opportunity for researchers from the region, as well as those working there, to offer their insights.


Former REK-funded Dr. Agbelengor successfully defended his PhD thesis (09.09.2024)

The doctoral student visited Freiburg and the ACT in 2022/23 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Mehler.


New ERC Grant for Franziska Zanker (ABI): "The Political Lives of Migrants: Perspectives from Africa" (05.09.2024)

The European Research Council will fund a new research project on migration in Africa, led by Dr. Franziska Zanker at the Arnorld-Bergstraesser-Institut.


ACT General Member Assembly was held online (26.07.2024)

Pathways to undoing epistemic injustice in English language education in Cameroon: A focus on decoloniality praxis (19.07.2024)

In a hybrid lecture at the University of Freiburg's Department of Linguistics, PhD Eric Ekembe from the University of Yaounde examined the extent to which the colonial legacy in English-language education mediates access to knowledge production in Cameroon.


Workshop Report Available: Human Remains in University Collections - Comparisons and Entanglements (15.07.2024)

Following research projects by the ABI and ACT on the restitution of human remains, a workshop on “Human Remains in University Collections - Comparison and Entanglements” was held at the ABI on July 15, 2024.



"Of Ears of the Dead and Voices of the Living" (15. und 18.07.2024)

A public science communication experiment on the subject of restitution took place on the Platz der Alten Synagoge in Freiburg, created by a group led by Dr. Balz Alter, together with E 3600 sicentific artworks, director Michael Buseke and dramaturge Lucie Tuma.

Movie Talk: "The Empty Grave" with ACT director Andreas Mehler (23.05.2024)

In a film talk at the Kommunales Kino, Andreas Mehler will share his expertise on coming to terms with German colonial crimes on the current film of the month "The Empty Tomb". The event takes place in cooperation with the ABI, freiburg-postkolonial and iz3w. The film will be shown in the original version in Swahili, German and English with German subtitles. Workshop Report: East African Citizenshop in Times of Change (22./29.04.2024)

The two-day workshop, organized by the ACT, ABI and ZASB, brought together reflections on citizenship in times of change from different disciplines and with different emphases. The report is now available!


Scientific talk: 'Agroforestry as Climate Change Adaptation: Experiences from the Ghanaian Cocoa Sector’ (08.05.2024)

Scientific lecture by Dr Bismark Kwesi Asitoakor from the CSIR Research Institute for Plant Genetic Resources, Ghana, on the topic "Agroforestry as an adaptation to climate change: Experiences from the Ghanaian cocoa sector". Jointly organised by the ACT and the Chair of Geography of Global Change.


Recording available: Germany and Africa - Quo Vadis?

On 18.04.2024, Ambassador Christoph Retzlaff and Prof. Dr. Alexander Makulilo spoke about the future of German-African relations. A recording of the Freiburg Africa Talk is now available on the University of Freiburg's video portal.


New Video: "Mortui Vivos Docent"

As part of the project funded by Deutsches Zentrum Kulturgutverluste on reciprocal research into the Alexander Ecker Collection, a new video with Prof. Dr. Albert Gouaffo has been produced and is available both in the project media library and on the University of Freiburg's video portal.


ASA project "Decolonise Universities" successfully completed (6 February 2024)

How is knowledge production at universities still colonised today? In the project "Decolonize Universities: Participating in approaches to the decolonisation of knowledge production", four students looked at the process of decolonisation at two universities, the University of Ghana and the University of Freiburg.
